Rohm and Haas chemist and president-elect of American Chemical Society receives top honor

Catherine T. Hunt, Ph.D., President-Elect of the American Chemical Society and an official with Rohm and Haas Company, has been awarded the distinction of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellow. Election as a Fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers.

Hunt, who will become President of the world’s largest scientific society on Jan. 1, 2007, is Leader for Technology Partnerships (Emerging Technologies) at Rohm and Haas Co., Spring House, Pa.

This year 449 members have been awarded this honor by AAAS because of their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications. New Fellows will be presented with an official certificate and a gold and blue (representing science and engineering, respectively) rosette pin on Saturday, Feb. 17, from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Fellows Forum during the 2007 AAAS Annual Meeting in San Francisco.

This year’s AAAS Fellows were announced in the AAAS News & Notes section of the journal Science on Nov. 24.

As part of the Section on Chemistry, Hunt was elected as an AAAS Fellow “for leadership in promoting innovation, understanding, and appreciation of, and in furthering innovation within, the chemical enterprise across organizational and institutional boundaries.”

In 2002, Hunt was named Leader, Technology Partnerships, at Rohm and Haas — a program she launched to seek external research grants from government agencies and private foundations.

In four years, she helped secure more than $50 million in grants from entities including the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy, and has established research collaborations with leading academic institutions, industry partners and national laboratories. Throughout her career she has championed such strong collaborations across industry, academia and national labs in partnership with foundations and government agencies.

The tradition of AAAS Fellows began in 1874. Currently, members can be considered for the rank of Fellow if nominated by the Steering Groups of the Association's 24 sections, or by any three Fellows who are current AAAS members.

Hunt and her husband, Wesley Wolf, and son, James Wolf, reside in Ambler, Pa.
