American Chemical Society national meeting features presidential events

WASHINGTON, Aug. 3, 2017 — American Chemical Society (ACS) President Allison A. Campbell, Ph.D., will emphasize her theme of building communities in chemistry at the 254th ACS National Meeting & Exposition, Aug. 20 to 24 in Washington, D.C. The presidential events — which will focus on areas of significant importance: advocacy and communications, the chemistry of our planet and the safe practice of science — will be held at the Marriott Marquis Washington, D.C., and the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

The first event, “Science Communications: The Art of Developing a Clear Message,” organized in conjunction with the Royal Society of Chemistry, will help members share stories on how to positively and effectively communicate chemistry. This symposium will take place from 1:15 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 20, in the Marriott Marquis and will include an opportunity for audience members to develop and practice an elevator pitch on their chemical research.

On Monday the 21st, the all-day presidential symposium, “Building a Safety Culture Across the Chemistry Enterprise,” will feature a top-down approach in the morning session, followed by grassroots efforts in the afternoon. This symposium will be in the Marriott Marquis.

“Understanding the Chemistry of Our Planet” will feature renowned scientists discussing chemistry’s role in the Earth system and human impacts to the chemistry of our environment. This symposium will take place on Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the convention center. The “LGBTQ+ Presidential Reception” will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 22, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Details of these presidential events, eight events co-sponsored by Campbell, and nine other president-recommended symposia can be found at www.acs.org/dc2017.
