ACS President Allison Campbell issues statement on Society response to hurricanes

WASHINGTON, Sept. 29, 2017 — Today, American Chemical Society (ACS) President Allison A. Campbell, Ph.D., issued the following statement offering support for those impacted by hurricanes that recently damaged coastal regions of the U.S.

“In the wake of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, our thoughts are with all of those impacted by these storms. The unprecedented disasters in Texas, Florida and, most recently, Puerto Rico are distressing. As areas begin to recover and start to rebuild, ACS seeks to support those in the chemistry enterprise by serving as a clearinghouse for institutions and small businesses with particular chemistry-related needs, such as universities that have lost equipment or supplies. The Society is also available to connect parties in need with an ACS technical division, business or other affiliated group that might be in a position to provide direct assistance.

“Many of us feel helpless seeing the severity of the situation in Puerto Rico and other areas ravaged by Harvey, Irma and Maria. One thing you can consider is contributing to the charity of your choice if you have the ability to do so. The Red Cross is one such charity that gives you the option to direct your donation to a certain area.

“We recognize that many people are dealing with more urgent issues at present, but don’t hesitate to reach out to ACS if there is a role we can play to help get you back on your feet. You can contact me directly at president@acs.org or through ACS Member Services at service@acs.org.”

The American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society, is a not-for-profit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress.
