ACS celebrates International Year of the Periodic Table at Jan. 29 event and beyond

WASHINGTON, Jan. 28, 2019 — In celebration of the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements in 2019 (IYPT2019), American Chemical Society (ACS) President Bonnie Charpentier, Ph.D., will participate in the Jan. 29 opening ceremony at UNESCO in Paris. IYPT2019 is a global celebration of the history of the periodic table, one of science’s most significant achievements. The periodic table gets its due in 2019 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Dmitri Mendeleev’s groundbreaking table, published in 1869. Mendeleev wasn’t the first person to suggest a way to organize the chemical elements, however, nor the last. Scientists are still debating exactly how to arrange the periodic table.

ACS and chemical societies worldwide are holding IYPT2019 festivities throughout the year. Join the virtual celebration anytime at www.acs.org/iypt and on social media by:

• entering the “I Spy a Periodic Table” photo contest,
• posting on social media using #IYPT2019,
• planning an IYPT2019 event — and adding it to ACS’ calendar,
• voting for your favorite chemical element in the upcoming Periodic Playoff tournament,
• signing up for the Feb. 12 Global Women’s Breakfast, a networking event that will take place at locations worldwide, including ACS,
