American Chemical Society expands materials science portfolio with new journal

WASHINGTON, Jan. 28, 2019 — The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) today announced the addition of ACS Materials Letters to its portfolio of journals, responding to the needs of the ever-expanding and fast-paced global research community focused on materials science. ACS Materials Letters will serve as a forum for the rapid publication of high-quality and important contributions on the forefront of fundamental and applied research at the interface between materials and other disciplines, including chemistry, engineering and biology.

Bin Liu, Ph.D., provost’s chair professor and head of the department of chemical and biomolecular engineering at National University of Singapore, will serve as the inaugural deputy editor for ACS Materials Letters. Liu is a leading expert on the development of organic functional materials for energy, environmental and biomedical applications. Jillian Buriak, Ph.D., editor-in-chief of Chemistry of Materials, professor of chemistry and Canada research chair of nanomaterials at the University of Alberta, will serve as the ACS Materials Letters editor-in-chief.

ACS Materials Letters will be the ideal home for rapid publication of urgent letters from original and transformative research at the interface of chemistry, chemical engineering and materials science, covering both fundamentals and applications,” says Liu. “We look forward to receiving high-quality manuscripts on all aspects of materials research, especially those bridging multiple disciplines.”

The launch of ACS Materials Letters benefits from the proven success of its sister journal, Chemistry of Materials, which works to serve the materials community as the premier venue for the highest-quality publications in the area. “Materials chemistry continues to grow in a diverse range of areas. Due to the high interest by authors in ACS letters-style journals, we at Chemistry of Materials strongly support and look forward to the launch of our sister journal,” says Buriak.

“The launch of ACS Materials Letters underlines the firm commitment from ACS Publications to be a trusted publisher and partner for chemists, materials scientists, engineers and physicists worldwide working at the forefront of both fundamental and applied materials science research,” says James Milne, Ph.D., senior vice president, Journals Publishing Group at ACS Publications. “We are honored and delighted to have Professor Bin Liu as the inaugural deputy editor for ACS Materials Letters. Under her leadership, this new journal is poised to become the forum for the rapid dissemination of cutting-edge, peer-reviewed letters in the burgeoning field of materials science.”

ACS Materials Letters will begin accepting submissions in early February, with its first articles and issues appearing online a few months thereafter. The journal will be dedicated to publishing the most-transformative materials research with very fast processing times.
