American Chemical Society comment available Oct. 9 on 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1, 2019 — To assist with coverage of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world’s largest scientific society, will issue a statement from ACS President Bonnie A. Charpentier, Ph.D., shortly after the official announcement in Stockholm on Oct. 9. Charpentier also will be available for interviews shortly after the chemistry prize announcement.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which awards the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, plans to make the announcement at about 5:45 a.m. EDT on Oct. 9. Charpentier will be available for telephone interviews beginning at 6:15 a.m. and ending at 10:45 a.m. EDT. Journalists are encouraged to schedule an interview in advance by contacting ACS using the contact information below by 5 p.m. EDT on Oct. 4. Scheduling will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Many past winners of the chemistry prize were ACS members and authors of research papers published in ACS’ suite of 60 peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Bonnie A. Charpentier is senior vice president of regulatory, quality and drug safety at Cytokinetics, Inc. She earned her bachelor’s degree in anthropology and her Ph.D. in biology (plant physiology) from the University of Houston. Her first job in industry was as an analytical chemist, followed by a career in drug development. She has been an active member of ACS since 1982.
