American Chemical Society announces changes to Publications Division leadership

WASHINGTON, Sept. 13, 2019 — The American Chemical Society (ACS) has named James Milne, Ph.D., senior vice president of the Journals Publishing Group, as acting president of the ACS Publications Division. Milne will take the reins from Brian Crawford, Ph.D., who had announced his plans to retire earlier this year. Milne will serve in this acting role while the Society continues its active recruitment to fill the executive position.

Through its Publications Division, ACS publishes 60 peer-reviewed journals and eBooks, including digital archives of legacy scientific research published since the Society’s founding, as well as the industry-leading weekly news periodical, Chemical & Engineering News. The ACS portfolio of journals are among the most cited, most trusted and most read within the scientific literature. In addition, the division offers high-quality service to authors and readers, including rapid time to publication, cutting-edge web and mobile delivery platforms and comprehensive open-access options.

“I’d like to thank Dr. Crawford for his nearly 15 years of service and dedication to ACS and his leadership in the scientific publishing community. He has substantially expanded the ACS journal portfolio and had a positive impact on the Society’s reputation,” says ACS Executive Director and CEO Thomas Connelly Jr., Ph.D. “He leaves a strong and healthy division that will be capably led by Dr. Milne while we complete our recruitment process.”

The American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society, is a not-for-profit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. ACS is a global leader in providing access to chemistry-related information and research through its multiple databases, peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences. ACS does not conduct research, but publishes and publicizes peer-reviewed scientific studies. Its main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.
