ACS invites families to Kids Zone science activities in Philadelphia on March 21

WASHINGTON, Feb. 25, 2020 — The American Chemical Society (ACS) is hosting a fun, educational Kids Zone event for families on Saturday, March 21, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University in Philadelphia.

The outreach event is part of the ACS Spring 2020 National Meeting & Exposition that will be held March 22 to 26, in Philadelphia. Come learn about the wonders of chemistry through hands-on activities about the different interactions of polymers and water. And take part in the Academy’s World Water Weekend, where scientists and educators will guide visitors through the museum and engage guests with science demonstrations, giveaways and educational materials about water and its conservation.

During the museum’s World Water Weekend, be sure to:

  • Visit the ACS Kids Zone to chat with our chemists and learn what happens when polymers interact with water, and how understanding this helps chemists make better products for our everyday use. Kids can pick up a goody bag while supplies last!
  • Enjoy an engaging film about pioneering scientist Ruth Patrick, Ph.D., one of the first researchers to study biodiversity as an indicator of stream health. Viewing times begin at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Meet live animals at the “Survival of the Slowest” exhibit. Discover which species have survived for millions of years, despite being very slow. Meet a two-toed sloth, tarantula, chameleon and horned frog. Touch a tortoise, iguana, snake, hedgehog or gecko. Catch live animal feedings and more!
  • Learn about the Academy in action. Through a series of film shorts, discover the incredible work of the Academy in connecting the community with the environment. Viewing times begin at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Explore rare specimens and artifacts from freshwater and marine environments.
  • Talk to experts at the Academy and learn about the amazing research they do around Philadelphia and the Delaware River Valley. Explore the human impact of water research and find out more about how science helps make the world a better place.
  • Perform experiments to learn how local waterways are affected by climate change and pollution, and brainstorm simple, effective ways to reduce your impact on the environment.

Admission to the museum is required to attend the event. Pay what you wish to celebrate the anniversary of the Academy’s founding. For more information, visit www.acs.org/kidszone or the event page on Facebook.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a nonprofit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. ACS’ mission is to advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and its people. The Society is a global leader in providing access to chemistry-related information and research through its multiple research solutions, peer-reviewed journals, scientific conferences, eBooks and weekly news periodical Chemical & Engineering News. ACS journals are among the most cited, most trusted and most read within the scientific literature; however, ACS itself does not conduct chemical research. As a specialist in scientific information solutions (including SciFinder® and STN®), its CAS division powers global research, discovery and innovation. ACS’ main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.
