American Chemical Society announces new Bioconjugate Chemistry editor in chief, Theresa Reineke

WASHINGTON, Dec. 8, 2022 – The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) has appointed Theresa Reineke, Ph.D., of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities (UMTC), as editor in chief of Bioconjugate Chemistry.

Reineke has held several roles across the ACS journal portfolio, most notably as a founding associate editor with ACS Macro Letters, where she was on the editorial team for 10 years. Additional editorial advisory boards she has served on include Bioconjugate Chemistry, Biomacromolecules and ACS Applied Polymer Materials. She is also an active member of several ACS technical divisions.

Bioconjugate Chemistry is the premier journal of transformative research at the chemistry-biology interface,” Reineke says. “I am honored and excited to play a lead role in shaping the future of this outstanding journal.”

Her research interests include studying fundamental monomer and polymer synthesis and degradation, exploring structural ordering and directing molecular interactions of macromolecules with biological systems, and understanding fundamental physicochemical and biological properties of macromolecular materials. The Reineke research group focuses on enabling fundamental chemistry and applied technology advancements of macromolecules for drug delivery, imaging, gene and cell therapy, genome editing and sustainability. Her group is working on several projects in drug/nucleic acid delivery and sustainability.

Reineke is a Prager chair in macromolecular science and a Distinguished McKnight university professor in the department of chemistry at UMTC, where she also holds graduate faculty appointments in the departments of chemical engineering/materials science and pharmaceutics. She was named a 2022 ACS Arthur C. Cope scholar and has received several other prestigious honors, including the 2018 DuPont Nutrition & Health Science Excellence Medal, a National Institutes of Health Director’s New Innovator Award, a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and the 2017 Carl S. Marvel Award for Creative Polymer Chemistry from the ACS division of polymer chemistry, along with numerous junior investigator awards from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation and Arnold & Mabel Beckman Foundation.

“I am grateful to have worked with the two previous editors in chief, Claude Meares and Vince Rotello, who have been visionary leaders for the journal and field,” Reineke says. “I am incredibly honored and excited to be the next leader of Bioconjugate Chemistry; this journal has meant a lot to my education and career. My first two biological chemistry articles were published back-to-back 20 years ago in the journal. My first editorial advisory board invitation was from Bioconjugate Chemistry, which I have served on since 2010.”

Reineke will officially assume her role on Jan. 1, 2023. Bioconjugate Chemistry invites original contributions on all research at the interface between synthetic and biological materials. The mission of the journal is to communicate advances in a broad range of fields, including therapeutic delivery, imaging, bionanotechnology and synthetic biology. Bioconjugate Chemistry is intended to provide a forum for presentation of research relevant to all aspects of bioconjugates, including the preparation, properties and applications of biomolecular conjugates.
