WASHINGTON, Aug. 1, 2024 — Explore the wonders of photography at the American Chemical Society’s (ACS’) Kids Zone. Join ACS for this free family science event at the Lola & Rob Salazar Student Wellness Center at the University of Colorado Denver on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. MDT. The event is being held the day before the start of ACS Fall 2024.

To register, visit the ACS Kids Zone website. Registration is required in advance.

Families can participate in the following activities:

Imagine Imaging
Complete a puzzle with all the pieces face down by using a magnet as well as the senses of touch and hearing.

Laser-Focused on Chemistry
Use a simple model of an atomic force microscope to determine the arrangement of objects on a hidden piece of cardboard.

Rainbow Spectroscope
Compare colorful stripes, known as spectra, to known patterns, and identify which element is in each of the three tubes.

Solar Protector Detector
Make a UV-detecting wristband to identify when to wear sunglasses, sunscreen or other sun protection.

Light Prints
Choose a stencil and make a print, called a cyanotype, with a UV flashlight on special paper, like that used in the early days of photography.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a nonprofit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. ACS’ mission is to advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and all its people. The Society is a global leader in promoting excellence in science education and providing access to chemistry-related information and research through its multiple research solutions, peer-reviewed journals, scientific conferences, e-books and weekly news periodical Chemical & Engineering News. ACS journals are among the most cited, most trusted and most read within the scientific literature; however, ACS itself does not conduct chemical research. As a leader in scientific information solutions, its CAS division partners with global innovators to accelerate breakthroughs by curating, connecting and analyzing the world’s scientific knowledge. ACS’ main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.
