FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is excited to announce that Team USA earned four gold medals at the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) held in Dubai from July 5 to 14. The students who represented Team USA are Adam Madni (Carmel High School in Indiana), Yash Shah (Panther Creek High School in North Carolina), William Wang (Lakeside Upper School in Washington), and Max Zhou (San Marino High School in California).

This year’s competition had students from 90 countries participate. Of the 354 participants, 220 earned a gold, silver or bronze medal. Overall, Team USA had an impressive performance.

The team was supported by head mentor Songwen Xie of Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, as well as college mentor Borislava Bekker from American River College. High school mentors Komal Jain of Lake Braddock Secondary School and Steve Lantos of Brookline High School also supported the team. ACS has sponsored the U.S. team annually since the country joined the Olympiad in 1984.

IChO originated with Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary in 1968. Soon, other Eastern European countries joined the event; Western Europe began participating in 1974. The first U.S. team competed in 1984, winning one silver and two bronze medals.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1876 and chartered by the U.S. Congress. ACS is committed to improving all lives through the transforming power of chemistry. Its mission is to advance scientific knowledge, empower a global community and champion scientific integrity, and its vision is a world built on science. The Society is a global leader in promoting excellence in science education and providing access to chemistry-related information and research through its multiple research solutions, peer-reviewed journals, scientific conferences, e-books and weekly news periodical Chemical & Engineering News. ACS journals are among the most cited, most trusted and most read within the scientific literature; however, ACS itself does not conduct chemical research. As a leader in scientific information solutions, its CAS division partners with global innovators to accelerate breakthroughs by curating, connecting and analyzing the world’s scientific knowledge. ACS’ main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.
