Polymers are highly versatile materials that make up numerous products, ranging from the ubiquitous water bottles to personal protection equipment. 44 million tons of plastic waste were managed in the US in 2019, with 86 % of all that plastic landfilled, and only 5 % recycled. We can and must do better than this, for the benefit of our planet and future generations. The chemistry community leads the way! This symposium aims to highlight advances in analytical chemistry for the characterization of different types of plastic, advances in physical and materials chemistry for the improvement of properties of recycled plastic, advances in organic and polymer chemistry for the upcycling of waste plastic and the synthesis of recyclable polymers, advances in biological chemistry for the preparation of bioplastics, and advances in process chemistry and chemical engineering for the chemical recycling of plastics.

Transferring electrons across semiconductor-molecule interfaces has become a critical component in many modern solar light-harvesting systems and chemical photocatalysis and includes both electron transfer to and from surface bound molecular sensitizers as well as systems where the optical absorption is initiated in the semiconductor and results in electron or hole transfer to surface bound catalysts. This symposium brings together experimental and theoretical chemists working in various areas from solar hydrogen production, photo-electrochemistry, and other areas.
