This symposium provides a platform for speakers to talk about their experiences as they relate to diversity and inclusion. It is now generally accepted that strengthening diversity in the chemical sciences is an ever-present issue. Our community is continually working toward this goal; however, minorities such as African Americans and Hispanics/Latinos only make up a small percentage of the chemistry work force. In this symposium, we will hear from past recipients of the Stanley C. Israel award tell their stories of how they devoted much of their careers to the idea of strengthening and promoting diversity in the chemical sciences.

We seek abstracts examining the transport and fate of metals in the environment. Climate change and anthropogenic activities like flooding, drought, extreme weather events, wastewater treatment effluent, landfill seepage, and industrial activities provide pathways for metals to enter the environment. Heavy metals, especially nanosized, enter terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and their fate and transport are dependent on their chemical and physical properties. The properties that govern interactions between individual heavy metals and environmental media control their behavior, mobilization, and transformation in air, humic substances, and water. However, their interactions with other pollutants such as micro/nano plastics and other emerging contaminants are not well understood. Additionally, physicochemical interactions with these pollutants and dissolved organic matter in ecosystems are difficult to disentangle. Understanding the impact of heavy metal exposure on the ecosystem requires a network of interdisciplinary researchers to integrate knowledge and expertise to identify routes of transport and the fate of metals in the environment.

With the advent of nanotechnology, metals in consumer products and electronics and their multiple industrial, agricultural, and energy applications have led to their wide distribution in the environment. Despite increased regulatory standards, regulators can no longer control the introduction of metals into the atmosphere, aquatic and terrestrial systems. We seek presentations focusing on analytical methods to detect trace metals in complex ecosystems. Topics of interest include sample preparation optimization and nanosized metal characterization and quantification. Analysis of trace metals in complex matrices relies on many complementary analytical techniques for accurate characterization and quantification of metals and metal speciation. Interfacing novel analytical concepts and approaches to the latest analytical instrumentation techniques enable more precise quantification and speciation of elemental and nanoscale contaminants.

Polymeric systems show a variety of intriguing properties at the molecular scale which determine the specific material behavior. Over many years synthetic routes have been developed to create polymers of increasingly complex architectures. Being highly promising, because of the high tunability due to many tunable parameters typical for complex architectures, many unprecedented observations have been made and novel material properties have been emerged. The symposium welcomes speakers from all areas of polymers and discusses recent advancements with the topics: 1. New routes for the synthesis of polymers; 2. Self-assembly, structure and dynamics of polymers in solution; 3. Structure and Dynamics in polymers and changes in blends of polymers with different architectures.
