FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, July 26, 2023 — The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) is proud to renew and strengthen its continued dedication to global sustainability and equity by joining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Publishers Compact.

By signing on, ACS Publications pledges support to the SDGs, with particular attention to three: Zero Hunger (goal 2); Affordable and Clean Energy (goal 7); and Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (goal 9). By continuing to prioritize these areas, ACS Publications is helping develop sustainability practices and accelerating progress of the United Nations’ SDGs.

“Sustainability is a key value at ACS Publications, and we are elated to join the SDG Publishers Compact and champion these goals,” says ACS Publications Senior Vice President, Journals Publishing Group, Sarah Tegen. “We are proud that our portfolio of journals, including the newly introduced ACS ES&T Air and ACS Sustainable Resource Management, drives significant innovation and progress by publishing groundbreaking work on sustainability research across the fields of chemistry.”

Numerous journals in the ACS Publications portfolio are dedicated to publishing research in the areas of food science, clean energy and industrial innovation. ACS’ growing portfolio of journals publishes research that contributes to sustainability — including titles such as the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Energy & Fuels, and Environmental Science & Technology, among others. Select journals frequently publish special issues on specific topics in these areas. ACS Publications is contributing to the progress of the SDGs by featuring some of the most innovative work in these fields.

Articles in ACS Publications journals also support the ACS Campaign for a Sustainable Future. Last year, ACS announced a portfolio of strategic initiatives designed to have a transformational impact on the chemistry enterprise. ACS will invest up to $50 million over the span of five years on four initiatives that embody ACS’ commitment to advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and all its people.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a nonprofit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. ACS’ mission is to advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and all its people. The Society is a global leader in promoting excellence in science education and providing access to chemistry-related information and research through its multiple research solutions, peer-reviewed journals, scientific conferences, eBooks and weekly news periodical Chemical & Engineering News. ACS journals are among the most cited, most trusted and most read within the scientific literature; however, ACS itself does not conduct chemical research. As a leader in scientific information solutions, its CAS division partners with global innovators to accelerate breakthroughs by curating, connecting and analyzing the world’s scientific knowledge. ACS’ main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.

The SDG Publishers Compact is a voluntary commitment that recognizes the responsibility of the publishing industry to create a sustainable future through action. Signatories aspire to develop sustainable practices and act as champions of the SDGs during the Decade of Action (2020–2030), publishing books and journals that will help inform, develop and inspire action in that direction. This compact follows other compacts for the Media sector and businesses in general.
