The unusual spiroacetal natural product (S)-olean is the female-attracting sex pheromone of the olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae Gmelin). The (R)-enantiomer attracts males of the species. Recently, B. List and I. Čorić at the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research (MÜlheim an der Ruhr, Germany) developed an enantioselective synthesis of (S)-olean that uses a bulky chiral Brønsted acid catalyst.
