Cortistatin A is a steroid that can be isolated from the marine sponge Corticium simplex. It has been shown to block angiogenesis, or new blood vessel growth, and therefore it may be useful for treating macular degeneration. However, its availability—both from natural sources and synthesis—is limited. Recently, coristatin A analogues have shown efficacy in animal testing.
