FluorodecylPOSS, with the formula
[CF3(CF2)7(CH2)2]8Si8O12, is a member of a class of compounds called fluorinated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes. They consist of almost spherical cores of silicon and oxygen surrounded by eight highly fluorinated “arms”. This combination results in several interesting properties, including superhydrophobicity. Even though their density is twice that of water, their crystals float on water surfaces.
