α-Glucose-1-phosphate is ubiquitous in nature. In plants, it is the immediate precursor of starch, whereas in animals it produces glycogen; it is also the first decomposition product when an organism uses starch or glycogen for energy. Its isolation and synthesis were reported by the Nobel Prize–winning biochemists Carl and Gerty Cori and Sidney Colowick in 1937.
