D.C. chemist re-elected to board of world’s largest scientific society

WASHINGTON, Dec. 3, 2009 — Dennis Chamot, Ph.D., associate executive director of the National Research Council’s (NRC) Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences in Washington, D.C., has been re-elected to the board of directors of the American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society. He will begin his third three-year term in January 2010 as director-at-large.

An ACS member since 1965, Chamot has served on numerous Society committees and task forces, including those dealing with globalization, governance review, education, public relations, women in the chemical professions, young chemists, and occupational safety and health. He also has been chair of the ACS Division of Professional Relations and a councilor for that division. For the past three years, he has been chair of the Society’s Budget and Finance Committee.

Chamot received a B.S. and M.S. in chemistry from Polytechnic University in 1964; a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Illinois in 1969; and an M.B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School, in 1974.

He began his professional career as a research chemist with DuPont. Subsequently he served in several positions with the AFL-CIO, including executive assistant to the president of the Department for Professional Employees. In 1994, he was appointed deputy executive director of the NRC’s Commission on Engineering and Technical Systems. Chamot has served as a member of advisory and study committees for the National Science Foundation, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the U.S. Department of Labor, and prior to employment, at the National Research Council.
