American Chemical Society launches e-book program to span broad range of chemistry topics

WASHINGTON, July 29, 2009 — The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) announces the launch of its e-book program: ACS Symposium Series Online — a dynamic new online collection of over 1,200 ACS books from the ACS Symposium Series and Advances in Chemistry Books Series.

Effective today, every book dating from 1950 through 2009 is now online and fully integrated on the award winning ACS Web Editions platform. This major addition to the platform makes the peer- reviewed book content discoverable via search, presented alongside journal content with all of the same features, functionality, and related content linking.

The e-books cover a broad range of topics including agricultural and food chemistry, cellulose and renewable materials, chemical education, organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, materials, and more.

Following the recent launch of the new ACS Web Editions platform, the 2008 Award for the Best eProduct/Website or Platform from the Association of American Publishers was awarded to the ACS for its combined integrated online offerings. The addition of e-books further strengthens the ACS Publications position as the leading publisher of peer-reviewed research in the chemical and related sciences, serving scientific communities worldwide through a commitment to quality, reliability, and innovation.

Prominent academic research institutions have already purchased access to the full content in the ACS Symposium Series Online including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Johns Hopkins University.

Founded by the ACS in 1949, the Advances in Chemistry series was launched to provide the research community with published content beyond the scope of the Society’s existing journals at that time. The Advances series remained in publication until 1998 when the ACS Symposium Series, launched in 1974, had evolved to a point where it fulfilled the same needs as did the Advances in Chemistry series and beyond.

A video demonstration is now available, including new features such as the “Title Match” box and updated “Quick Search” tools that were released for all ACS Web Editions with the launch of e-books.

Additional information on the ACS Books program is available.

Print copies of the ACS Symposium Series are produced and distributed by Oxford University Press.
