American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute® announces winners of Ciba Travel Awards

WASHINGTON, Dec. 6, 2011—Four college students are recipients of the 2011 Ciba Travel Awards in Green Chemistry. The awards will allow these students to sharpen their expertise in sustainable scientific practices at the 16th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference in Washington, D.C., and at American Chemical Society (ACS) technical meetings and conferences.

“Green chemistry plays a crucial role in helping to ensure that the manufacturing and use of chemicals has minimal impact on our environment, and these students represent some of the best and brightest that green chemistry has to offer,” said Robert Peoples, Ph.D., director of the ACS Green Chemistry Institute (ACS GCI).

The students were selected for the award based on their research or educational interest in green chemistry. They will each give an oral or poster presentation on their area of interest at the conference they attend, and will submit a report to the ACS GCI on their experience at the conference.

This year’s winners are:

  • Candice Cooper – of Paterson, Wash., an undergraduate student at the University of Washington ,who will attend the 244th ACS National Meeting in Philadelphia, Pa., in August 2012.
  • Emily Hong – of Nashville, Tenn., an undergraduate student at Yale University, who will attend the 16th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference in Washington, D.C., in June 2012.
  • Adam Keith – of Toledo, Ohio, a graduate student at the University of Toledo, who will attend the 16th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference in Washington, D.C., in June 2012.
  • Parker McCrary – of Alpharetta, Ga., a graduate student at the University of Alabama, who will attend the 243rd ACS National Meeting in San Diego, Calif., in March 2012.

The award sponsors the participation of high school, undergraduate and graduate students in ACS programs that have a significant green chemistry or sustainability component.
