American Chemical Society names Shana J. Sturla new editor-in-chief of Chemical Research in Toxicology

WASHINGTON, Nov. 10, 2017 — The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) today named Shana J. Sturla, Ph.D., of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETH Zürich) as the next editor-in-chief of Chemical Research in Toxicology, the only chemistry-focused journal dedicated to advancing the understanding of toxic agents. Sturla will take over leadership of the distinguished peer-reviewed journal, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, at the beginning of 2018.

Sturla joined the faculty of ETH Zürich in the Department of Health Sciences and Technology in 2009 and was promoted to full professor of toxicology in 2016. Upon her arrival in Switzerland, Sturla was the only woman in Zürich to be awarded a prestigious European Research Council Starting Grant that year. In 2014, Sturla received Chemical Research in Toxicology’s Young Investigator in Toxicology Award, and in 2015 she became the vice president of the Swiss Society of Toxicology. Her research focuses on the chemical basis of mutagenesis and toxicity, of which she seeks to delineate the relationships between chemical structures, enzyme-catalyzed chemical transformations, and cellular responses to environmental and dietary toxicants and cancer drugs.

Chemical Research in Toxicology published its first issue in 1988 with a mission of advancing the understanding of the impact of chemical and biological agents on human health. The journal publishes articles, reviews, perspectives and letters covering all aspects of the chemical basis of toxic responses.

“The journal is an important platform for science that is both fundamental and valuable to society,” Sturla says. “I owe a great deal of gratitude to the chemical toxicology community and feel a strong sense of responsibility to take on this post. A major goal is to broaden the scope of the journal in order to bring in contributions from researchers who want to communicate results with a real impact on advancing the predictive capacity of toxicology in many areas.”

Sturla will succeed Stephen S. Hecht, Ph.D., who has served as the journal’s editor since 2013. Hecht is the Wallin Land Grant Professor of Cancer Prevention at the University of Minnesota Cancer Center, where Sturla served under his guidance as a postdoctoral fellow.

“We are delighted to welcome Professor Shana Sturla in her new role as editor-in-chief of Chemical Research in Toxicology,” says James Milne, Ph.D., senior vice president, Journals Publishing Group at ACS Publications. “Professor Sturla’s years of editorial experience with the journal and expertise in the areas of food and drug interactions with cancer therapy, carcinogen metabolism and genotoxicity mechanisms will be highly valuable to the toxicology research community.”

About the American Chemical Society

ACS is a global leader in providing access to chemistry-related information and research through its multiple databases, peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences. ACS does not conduct research, but publishes and publicizes peer-reviewed scientific studies. Through its Publications Division, the Society publishes 50+ peer-reviewed journals and eBooks. ACS journals are among the most cited, most trusted and most read within the scientific literature. The Publications Division offers high-quality service to authors and readers, including rapid time to publication, cutting-edge web and mobile delivery platforms and comprehensive open-access options. The Society's main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.
