ChemRxiv announces streamlined submission of research for journal peer review

WASHINGTON, Nov. 30, 2018 — Now in its second year of successfully sharing research findings openly with the global chemistry community, ChemRxiv today announced Direct Journal Transfer, a new feature that will help authors submit their posted preprints to established journals for editorial consideration and peer review. This feature, which is now available on the ChemRxiv website, currently enables direct submission to journals published by the American Chemical Society (ACS), the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and the German Chemical Society (GDCh), including ChemPubSoc Europe (CPSE) journals. Those ChemRxiv founder society partners welcome other interested scientific publishers to inquire about adoption of ChemRxiv’s Direct Journal Transfer capability for their journals.

Since its inception in 2017, ChemRxiv has attracted more than 800 original preprints from authors across 40 different countries. Global readers have responded in kind, with preprints read more than 800,000 times over the last year. Many of these preprints have evolved into full research publications appearing in prominent journals, including ACS Central Science, Angewandte Chemie, Chemical Science, Nature and Science, underscoring the excellent quality of the research being posted to ChemRxiv. Direct Journal Transfer will further enhance the utility of ChemRxiv by facilitating the integration of editorial peer review across publishers and their journal delivery platforms.

“After a strong inaugural year, we are delighted by the global chemistry community’s response to and participation in ChemRxiv,” says Marshall Brennan, Ph.D., publishing manager for ChemRxiv. “Given the rapid pace of scientific discovery, it is vital that we continue to improve the researcher experience. Our goal with Direct Journal Transfer is to ensure that potential high-impact research findings posted to ChemRxiv can be swiftly forwarded for formal peer review and editorial evaluation at respected journals in a fashion that reduces workloads for busy scientific authors.”

ChemRxiv contains an easy-to-use preprint submission system powered by Figshare. Most preprints are openly available within 1-2 business days, which allows submissions to be vetted for plagiarism and compliance with the site’s scientific guidelines prior to their uploading. From within ChemRxiv, authors now can use Direct Journal Transfer to select a preprint from their online profile and then forward the file(s) to a journal for review and possible publication. Upon that transfer, the respective journal will contact authors for any additional details required to progress the submission through peer review.

ChemRxiv preprints have unique digital object identifiers (known as DOIs) and are indexed by CrossRef, Chemical Abstract Services and Google Scholar. With Direct Journal Transfer now enabled for research journals of ACS, RSC and GDCh, participation in ChemRxiv makes it easy for authors to choose from a range of leading chemistry journals published by those scientific societies when seeking to publish their work. Upon journal publication, ChemRxiv preprints contain a link directing readers to the final published version of record at the official journal site, thus ensuring that future research is built upon the scientific integrity of that peer-reviewed information.

About the American Chemical Society
The American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society, is a not-for-profit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. ACS is a global leader in providing access to chemistry-related information and research through its multiple databases, peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences. ACS does not conduct research, but publishes and publicizes peer-reviewed scientific studies. Through its Publications Division, the Society publishes 50+ peer-reviewed journals and eBooks. ACS journals are among the most-cited, most-trusted and most-read within the scientific literature. The Publications Division offers high-quality service to authors and readers, including rapid time to publication, cutting-edge web and mobile delivery platforms and comprehensive open access options. The Society's main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.

About the Royal Society of Chemistry
The Royal Society of Chemistry advances excellence in the chemical sciences. With over 50,000 members and a knowledge business that spans the globe, the Royal Society of Chemistry is the U.K.’s professional body for chemical scientists; a not-for-profit organisation with more than 175 years of history and an international vision for the future. The Royal Society of Chemistry promotes, supports and celebrates chemistry and works to shape the future of the chemical sciences — for the benefit of science and humanity.

About the German Chemical Society
The Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh) is the largest chemical society in continental Europe with members from academe, education, industry and other areas. The GDCh supports chemistry in teaching, research and application and promotes the understanding of chemistry in the public. In 2017 the GDCh celebrated the 150th anniversary of the founding of its predecessor society, the Deutsche Chemische Gesellschaft.
