Purpose

The Irving S. Sigal Global Mobility Awards for Postdoctoral Researchers aims to recognize and support international postdoctoral scholars conducting research outside of the United States in the field of chemistry. This award supports the attendance and abstract presentation at the ACS Fall Meeting.

Description

Awardees are expected to present their research at the ACS Fall Meeting. They will receive registration to the ACS Meeting and, typically, $3,000 to help offset some of the travel expenses associated with the meeting.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be conducting postdoctoral research in chemistry (all fields).
  • Be non-United States citizens residing and conducting postdoctoral research outside the United States in the eligible region (see below) at the time of the application deadline.
  • Have an abstract of their work submitted (and, ideally) accepted for presentation (oral or poster) at the ACS Fall meeting. 
  • Have not presented in person at an ACS meeting.

Eligible region for ACS Fall 2025 Meeting is: Argentina, Chile, Uruguay
Note: Eligible regions will rotate yearly.

Compliance with US sanctions law: ACS complies fully with U.S. economic sanctions law. Applicants, the post-doctoral institution with which they are affiliated, and any funding sources or other entities providing support (whether through prior employment or otherwise) will be screened against various U.S. government lists of sanctioned/denied parties. ACS will not provide funding to individuals who are sanctioned under U.S. law or affiliated with a sanctioned entity.

Application Requirements and Timeline

Applicants must submit:

  • Résumé or C.V.
  • A brief statement of interest (1-page maximum) describing how the travel award will support and impact their scientific pursuits.
  • The copy of the abstract submission confirmation and, if available, abstract acceptance for the ACS Fall meeting.
  • Contact information of a research mentor that will submit a letter of recommendation prior to January 20, 2025.
  • One-page document listing all expected expenses related to the ACS Fall Meeting.

Submitting Your Application

  1. Create an account on Foundant using the following link: Scholarship Lifecycle Manager (grantinterface.com)
  2. After creating your account:
    • Click Apply next to “Irving S. Sigal Global Mobility Award for Postdoctoral Researchers” to submit your application.
    • Note: You will be asked to enter demographic information and contact information for one professional who can send a letter of recommendation on your behalf. Also, you will be asked to upload pdf files of 1) your Resume or CV, 2) Statement of Interest, 3) Abstract Submission Confirmation, and 4) a document that lists expected expenses.
  3. Submit your application by January 15, 2025, at 11:59 PM CST.
  4. Evaluators will review and select Global Mobility awardees.
  5. Global Mobility Awardees will be notified in late May.

ACS Fall 2024 Meeting: August 17 - 25, 2025

Reporting Requirements

Following the ACS Fall meeting, awardees will be asked to submit a one-page report on the experiences during the conference and the immediate and possible long-term impact of the Global Mobility Award.

  • Women are encouraged to apply.
  • Travel responsibility: Awardees traveling to the ACS Meeting are responsible for obtaining all necessary travel documents, including any required visas, and for complying with the laws of each country flown from (i.e., departure country), through (any transit country) and into the United States. Information about the documents you may need to travel to the U.S. are available here.
  • Awardees will be invited to join a pre-ACS meeting webinar and to join selected events during the conference.
  • Applicants will not receive feedback on their application.

History

The Irving S. Sigal Global Mobility Award Program was launched in 2024 thanks to the generosity of Dr. Catherine T. Sigal. The award programs honors Dr. Sigal’s late husband, Dr. Irving S. Sigal, and aims to help advance the careers of postdoctoral scholars in chemistry globally.

The award program is supported by the Irving S. Sigal Postdoctoral Endowment which also supports the Irving S. Sigal Postdoctoral Fellowship.
