American Chemical Society honors Mamie Moy with 2023 Award for Volunteer Service

WASHINGTON, July 14, 2022 — The American Chemical Society (ACS) has named Mamie W. Moy as the 2023 recipient of the Award for Volunteer Service to the ACS. The award is presented annually to honor volunteer efforts that have served ACS and contributed to the organization’s goals and objectives. Moy will be recognized with the award at the ChemLuminary Ceremony at the ACS Fall 2023 meeting in San Francisco.

Moy has served ACS at all levels — local, regional and national. In addition, her many mentoring and diversity efforts over the past 50 plus years demonstrate the dedication, unselfish leadership, service and significant contributions that the award for volunteer service to ACS recognizes.

Professor emerita of chemistry at the University of Houston, Moy received her B.A. in chemistry from the University of Texas, Austin, and her M.S. in chemistry from the University of Houston.

For many years Moy has been active in various ACS committees, such as those supporting women chemists, minority affairs, diversity and women chemists of color. These committees aim to promote and support science education for women, diversity in the profession and public outreach.

“Moy’s extensive career at the University of Houston has impacted young women throughout Houston and the U.S.,” says Sunny C. Tang, Ph.D. “She has worked tirelessly for more than 40 years through both words and deeds to inspire young people, especially girls and underserved students, to learn about science, to excel and to pursue in earnest the opportunities around them.”

Students from all walks of life in the Houston metropolitan area have benefitted from her service.
