FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, Jan. 7, 2026 — The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) is proud to announce that Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP) has joined the ACS Publications portfolio. EHP is a globally respected journal with a legacy as a premier source for research findings at the intersection of the environment and human health.

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (of the National Institutes of Health) established the journal in 1972 and has since developed it into a leading publication for the environmental health sciences community. In 2025, NIH elected to donate the journal to a non-governmental publisher through the Federal Surplus Personal Property Donation Program. ACS, as a federally chartered nonprofit organization and eligible donee under the Program, acted quickly to develop a plan to safeguard the future of the journal. EHP was formally transferred to ACS at the close of 2025.

“I am thrilled to see EHP find a new home as an ACS journal, ensuring that this vital work will continue to reach the global scientific community,” says EHP Editor-in-Chief Joel Kaufman. “EHP has a rich legacy and is held in special regard by the community of environmental health scholars. I look forward to working with ACS Publications to build a rich future as well, benefiting from ACS' publishing expertise and shared commitment to advancing science for the benefit of humanity.”

As an enduring nonprofit scholarly society with a large portfolio of leading scientific journals, ACS is pleased to have the opportunity to uphold this foundational journal’s integrity and deepen ACS’ continued service to the scientific community.

“For more than five decades, Environmental Health Perspectives has been a trusted source of high-quality research articles that connect environmental factors to human health,” says ACS Publications Senior Vice President and Chief Publishing Officer Sarah Tegen. “We are honored to steward this important journal, preserving its editorial independence and ensuring its continuity for the global scientific community.”

ACS Publications aims to minimize further disruption for authors and readers and plans to re-open manuscript submissions to EHP and begin publishing in early 2026. EHP's previously published content will be available alongside all ACS journal content in the coming months. EHP will remain a fully open access journal and all article publishing charges will be waived for manuscripts submitted to the journal through the end of 2026.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1876 and chartered by the U.S. Congress. ACS is committed to improving all lives through the transforming power of chemistry. Its mission is to advance scientific knowledge, empower a global community and champion scientific integrity, and its vision is a world built on science. The Society is a global leader in promoting excellence in science education and providing access to chemistry-related information and research through its multiple research solutions, peer-reviewed journals, scientific conferences, e-books and weekly news periodical Chemical & Engineering News. ACS journals are among the most cited, most trusted and most read within the scientific literature; however, ACS itself does not conduct chemical research. As a leader in scientific information solutions, its CAS division partners with global innovators to accelerate breakthroughs by curating, connecting and analyzing the world’s scientific knowledge. ACS’ main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.
