Program Self-Evaluation & Assessment

Program Self-Evaluation and Assessment
Section 11

Program self-assessment is a critical process for evaluating the effectiveness and impact of 2YC chemistry programs. The collection and analysis of data on student learning outcomes, program performance, and other key metrics is used to identify areas of success and areas for improvement. By conducting program assessments, programs can ensure that they are aligned with their goals, meet the needs of their students, and remain relevant in a rapidly changing world. Program assessment also provides valuable insights for making data-driven decisions about resource allocation, program modifications, and strategic planning. Ultimately, regular program assessment can help ensure the quality of their educational offerings, improve student learning outcomes, and demonstrate accountability to stakeholders.

Program Goals & Objectives
Section 11.1

Essential Components

  • Programs or departments are reviewed regularly, both through internal and external entities.

Successful Practices

  • Program data, including class enrollment and graduation, attrition, and transfer rates, are collected and tracked through centralized institutional research.
  • Articulation agreements with 4 year schools are reviewed annually.

Aspirational Goals

  • Survey and interview data from chemistry faculty, staff, and students are included in the assessment.

Student Learning
Section 11.2

Essential Components

  • Student learning outcomes are developed and included in course syllabi.
  • Student outcome data are aggregated and reported to department and program directions to inform continual improvement of the program.

Successful Practices

  • Assessment tools are consistent across multiple sections of the same course.

Aspirational Goals

  • Periodic self-assessment of shared student learning outcomes and assessments is performed.
  • ACS final exams are used as part of the course assessment.
  • General education assessments  are developed.
