Preventing vitamin B12 deficiency among vegetarians, vegans and the elderly
Older people, vegetarians and vegans should take special care to get enough vitamin B12 through changes in their diets, a review of scientific studies on the vitamin has concluded. In the article, published in ACS’ Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the authors say that many of the best-known sources of vitamin B12 actually contain a form of the vitamin that humans can’t use.
Toward anti-odor, anti-bacterial fabrics with the scent of vanilla
A new study has established the feasibility of giving fabrics an anti-bacterial, odor-resistant coating with the fresh scent of vanilla. The technology also could have medical applications in preventing the spread of hospital infections via bed linens and other objects, according to the study, published in the ACS journal Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research.
Discovery of the missing link in evolution of bioluminescence
With bioluminescence — the process that makes fireflies glow — now a mainstay in medical research, scientists are reporting discovery of a “missing link” of its evolution, which represents one of the deepest mysteries about bioluminescence. It paves the way toward development of new enzymes that glow in different colors and are 10, 100 or 1,000 times brighter, they say in ACS’ journal Biochemistry.
Big environmental footprints: 21 percent of homes account for 50 percent of greenhouse gas emissions
Energy conservation in a small number of households could go a long way to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, scientists are reporting. Their study, which measured differences in energy demands at the household level, appears in the ACS journal Environmental Science & Technology.
Green farming could offset greenhouse gas emissions
Mention major human-related sources of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, and people usually think of coal-fired electric power plants, car and truck tailpipes and industry smokestacks. But an article in the current edition of Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN) focuses on an often overlooked source of the gas and how to deal with it. That source is farming, according to the weekly newsmagazine of the American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society.

C&EN Video Spotlight: Lanthanides Made Easy
The lanthanide elements reside at the bottom of the periodic table. Often called “rare earth elements,” they are essential components of lasers, as well as batteries for hybrid vehicles and iPhones. These elements can have different oxidation states — or hypothetical charges. This affects the properties of the compounds or complexes the element makes. For decades, chemists have believed that it was only possible to make lanthanide complexes in the +3 state. But now, a team at the University of California, Irvine, has overturned that dogma and made +2 complexes. Watch as C&EN Senior Editor Jyllian Kemsley explains the finding and how the complexes are made. Now that chemists know they can make the complexes, they’re eager to find ways to use them.

Prized Science: How the Science Behind ACS Awards Impacts Your Life video series is new for 2012! The first episode features the research of Dr. Robert Langer, winner of the 2012 ACS Priestley Medal. He is a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Priestley Medal is the highest honor of the ACS, and it recognizes Langer’s pioneering work making body tissues in the lab by growing cells on special pieces of plastic. Langer’s team has used the approach to make skin for burn patients, for instance, with the goal of eventually making whole organs for transplantation. The second episode features Dr. Chad Mirkin, winner of the 2012 ACS Award for Creative Invention. His research has provided patients with faster diagnoses for influenza and other respiratory infections, and new tests that improve care for heart disease. More episodes will appear later in the year. The series is available at the Prized Science website and on DVD by email request.

Synthetic vocal cords may someday heal the voices of singers like Julie Andrews — whose legendary voice was permanently damaged in a 1997 operation.
