FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, Aug. 20, 2025 — The American Chemical Society (ACS) announces the launch of the Graduate Student Success Grant, a one-time, $2.5 million initiative that provides support for graduate students whose research has been disrupted as a result of terminated or cancelled research grants.
ACS will award up to 100 grants of $25,000 each to help M.S. and Ph.D. students within one year of completing their degrees. Funds may be used by principal investigators for stipends and benefits necessary to maintain graduate student status, ensuring that affected students can complete their degree.
“This program addresses a growing concern — the disruption of graduate education due to the unexpected loss of research funding,” says Wayne E. Jones, ACS Chair of the Board of Directors and Director at Large. “These grants will help the future of our scientific workforce and the pipeline of chemistry innovators.”
Applications for the grant will open on Sept. 15, 2025, at 2 p.m. ET and close on Oct. 1, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET. One grant will be awarded per research institution, so principal investigators should coordinate with their department chair and the vice president for research to apply. Awardees will be informed by Oct. 15, and funds will be disbursed in 2025.
The Graduate Student Success Grant is administered by the ACS Board of Directors and is a first-of-its-kind rapid response effort by ACS. The program underscores ACS’ mission to advance chemistry, empower a global community and champion scientific integrity.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1876 and chartered by the U.S. Congress. ACS is committed to improving all lives through the transforming power of chemistry. Its mission is to advance scientific knowledge, empower a global community and champion scientific integrity, and its vision is a world built on science. The Society is a global leader in promoting excellence in science education and providing access to chemistry-related information and research through its multiple research solutions, peer-reviewed journals, scientific conferences, e-books and weekly news periodical Chemical & Engineering News. ACS journals are among the most cited, most trusted and most read within the scientific literature; however, ACS itself does not conduct chemical research. As a leader in scientific information solutions, its CAS division partners with global innovators to accelerate breakthroughs by curating, connecting and analyzing the world’s scientific knowledge. ACS’ main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.
