Lesson 3.4: Density: Sink and Float for Solids

Image
Wax

  • Wax is made of carbon and hydrogen atoms bonded together in long chains.
  • The chains are tangled, intertwined, and packed together to make the wax.

Image
Water

  • Water molecules are packed more closely together than the long molecules that make up wax.
  • The oxygen atoms in water are also smaller and heavier than the carbon atoms in wax. This contributes to making water more dense than wax.

Clay

  • Clay contains oxygen atoms like water but also contains heavier atoms such as silicon and aluminum.
  • These atoms are packed pretty close together which makes clay more dense than water.
